A house that runs itself, wired by you
Nine apps is not a smart home. It is the 1985 coffee table full of remotes, rebuilt in software.
A pile of smart devices, each with its own app, recreates exactly the problem the universal remote was invented to solve. The remotes became icons and the coffee table became a phone, but the count went up rather than down, and no two of them agree on where the off button lives.
Lighting, shades, climate, and security only feel like one system when they were designed as one system. That happens on paper, before anything is bought, and it is the part most DIY projects skip straight past on the way to ordering hardware.
You tell me how the house is actually used, which rooms matter, and what you want to stop thinking about. I come back with an equipment list that is verified compatible, a wiring plan you can follow or hand to an electrician, and an order of operations so nothing gets installed before the thing it depends on.
You do the physical work. Pulling wire, mounting keypads, and setting panels is well within reach for anyone comfortable with tools, and it is where essentially all of the labor savings live. I stay reachable while you are in the walls.
RTI and Lutron programming is where the system stops being a parts list. RTI processors and Lutron hubs arrive as capable, blank hardware: the processor needs code, the keypads need button assignments, and the interface needs to be built around how your family actually operates the house. Both require manufacturer software and dealer credentials, which is the single most common reason DIY projects stall out halfway.
I do that remotely. You mount the hardware and get it on the network, I connect and load the programming, then we test it together on the phone and adjust until the buttons do what you expect. It works the same whether you just installed the system or inherited it from a previous owner with no documentation at all. Other custom installers hire me for this same work on their own clients' systems, which is the clearest measure of it I can offer.
The network underneath matters more than people expect, since control traffic, streaming, and cameras all share it. I design the switching, VLANs, and wireless coverage, and lay out the rack so it can be worked on later without pulling everything out.
Voice control is worth adding once there is a real system underneath it. Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant can then run a whole scene rather than one device at a time, which is the difference between asking for dinner lighting and asking for four separate things. They are also the one part of this that needs an internet connection.
When you want something changed a year from now, you change it, because you have the files and know how it was built.
